Local Heroes: A Celebration of the Faces Behind ANAC
This month we feature a member of the Greater NY Association of Nurses in AIDS Care Chapter, Andrea Vinet. Congratulations, Andrea! We’re so proud of you!
Andrea Vinet is a nurse who is making a difference. She is truly our Greater New York’s local hero. She has been a nurse for over 45 years, having worked much of that time in oncology. Thus began her journey. It was in that setting that she first cared for people with AIDS diagnoses, those who had developed AIDS-related cancers. It didn’t take her long to identify the AIDS-related stigma most of her patients were experiencing in addition to their pervasive pain and suffering. This was to be the motivating force for her to become an HIV Health Educator and Advocate. Looking for some support of her own, she found ANAC and quickly joined over 15 years ago. She credits the organization with providing her much needed opportunities for networking and her own HIV nursing education. Energized, she quickly became an active member–serving as Secretary of the Greater New York Chapter and then as a GNY Director-at-Large, a position she continues in currently.
In 2008, she began to learn more about the growing population of people over 50 with HIV/AIDS. As her awareness of the difficulties and needs of older adults deepened, Andrea found her passion. Her focus has been two-fold. First, she works tirelessly to increase the visibility and awareness of the over 50 population infected with and affected by HIV. Her advocacy skills are put to good use as she works as an Activator, a position she was recruited for and trained as a member of the Council of Senior Centers and Services (CSCS). Second, she primarily focuses on bringing messages about HIV and the tools of prevention to our older adults. To this end, she has spoken about safe sex for seniors, on national TV (the CBS This Morning show) as well as at our GNY annual conference. Andrea speaks with seniors every chance she gets–which are many, especially since she continues to work as a volunteer with the American Cancer Society.
We are delighted to celebrate Andrea Vinet as our local hero!
Our Local Heroes campaign recognizes the tremendous work and dedication of ANAC Chapters by highlighting your local heroes. This is the second in a year-long series of features that recognizes the great work of our membership. Some of these individuals will be familiar to you, and others are the pillars that help keep ANAC thriving in your community.
